Why do you want to work with the LGBTQ+ community?

As someone who identifies as queer, I want to work with the LGBTQ+ community because I believe, and know personally, that representation of our community is so important. Growing up not being able to even get married until three years before I met my wife in 2017 (that feels wild in itself), I feel that LGBTQ+ love should always be celebrated with the utmost enthusiasm and wonder! Photographing my community always feels so special to me, and being entrusted with that is something I never take for granted.

Allyship

In my work as a photojournalist in the US, before I moved to Ireland a year ago, I have worked on stories highlighting the inequalities, community resilience, and the fight for visibility and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, specifically within the American South, where there is a very hostile political landscape. I have also made work for community organisations including OUTMemphis, a regional LGBTQIA+ organisation based in Memphis, Tennessee. Pronouns matter to me. Some of my closest friends are non-binary and trans, and getting this right isn't a small thing to them, so it isn't a small thing to me either. I have gender neutral/inclusive language throughout my wedding photography process so no one feels alienated. I've attended many protests and marches, both as a participant but usually as a photographer, providing images to the organisations later as pro bono work.

In terms of allyship, I will continue to give a discount to the LGBTQ+ community who book me in the future, accessibility is something I hold dear. I'll continue showing up to marches, and in my personal work as a documentary photographer, I am working on a project that centres queer families in Ireland, who went through IVF or surrogacy, where the parents do not have the same legal rights over their children as heterosexual parents do.
